Since 1999, the Wood Turning Center, located in Philadelphia and Craft Alliance in Saint Louis collaborate every two years on an invitational exhibition entitled Turned Multiples. In a world obsessed with artistic “originality,” the premise of the exhibition compels the participating artists to create artwork in a serial/ multiple manner by contemplating on the property and design potential of any given material or form. Often imbued with great artistic merits and physical nuances, the resulting work continually demonstrates the creative potential and versatility of seemingly repetitive processes utilizing mechanical tools such as a lathe.
This year’s Turned Multiples III is curated by Michael Hosaluk and Thomas Loeser renowned artists and educators in their field. As they articulate their vision:
The idea for this version of the (Turned) Multiples show developed as a result of our interest in seeing what artists that are primarily not wood turners would do when given the opportunity to develop a multiple using the lathe. The concept is simple: Design a piece you conceive of as a "multiple" and that makes use of the lathe in its production. Then, execute that piece either using your own resources to resolve any technical issues, or by taking advantage of the curators and the Wood Turning Center for technical support. You are free to take this invitation in any direction you want as long as your finished objects address the theme of turning and multiples.
