THE WOOD TURNING CENTER ANNOUNCES
Furniture Primavera
5 April - 31 May 2002
Reception: Friday, 5 April 5-7 pm
Slides available on request
To coincide with the Philadelphia Furniture & Furnishings Show at the Convention Center, April 19-21, the Wood Turning Center announces a furniture exhibition. Titled Furniture Primavera, it shows a collection of studio furniture, brought together primarily because the works incorporate the use of the lathe. Lathe turning has played an important part in furniture making historically and this time-honored skill continues to be integral to the output of some furniture makers.
The show's title complements its season as well as its content. Several pieces grow out of a spring vegetable garden; one includes childrens toys traditional for this time of year; all are fresh examples of studio furniture making. The Wood Turning Center has tossed a salad of whimsical, practical and sculptural works in a variety of media that is tasty and guaranteed to please all palates.
The participating artists are (but not limited to):
David Ebner
Michael Hosaluk
Jack Larimore
Kim Kelzer
Aspy Khambatta
Craig Nutt
David Rogers
Mark Sfirri
Jon Siegal
Christopher Weiland
Examples from the show include:
· Craig Nutt: a small table with onion blossom legs
· David Rogers' Rest, a thought-provoking sculpture incorporating the human figure with a furniture form
· Jon Siegel's chair with banister back and natural rush seat
· Christopher Weiland's cabinet containing a collection of spin tops
· David Ebner's Scallion Coat Rack
