Challenge VII: dysFUNctional will run in the Center through January 17, 2009. The exhibition creates visual dialogue between objects and videos that never were intended to be together. Collaborations at the Echo Lake Conferences: The First Ten Years
June 6 - July 19, 2008

Over 10 years, experts in wood, metal, and glass shared their methods and collaborated to reach creative new results. This exhibition reflects the thoughtful and delightful results of interacting and experimenting with like-minded makers on the same short deadline!

Echo Lake is an annual event in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. The objective at Echo Lake is to bring together a diverse group of artists for several days with few expectations other than people working collaboratively and creatively to make things. New skills and new friends evolve during these intense days together.

Over the years, internationally known artists have participated in Echo Lake. This has included twenty-four artists from the Wood Turning Center's residency program, the International Turner's Exchange (ITE). The mix typically includes 30 - 40 wood turners and carvers, furniture makers, painters, glass, and metal workers - and creates a diverse group for three days of collaboration, community, and fun.
Civilization as They Knew It
Civilization as They Knew It: Work by Stephen 1963-2008

April 4 – July 19, 2008

“I try to reveal those places, within us and without us, where past and future coexist, beyond fashion and geography, eternally, while time flies.”

-Stephen Paulsen

Civilization as They Knew It provides a retrospective of California artist Stephen Paulsen’s evolving work, from pieces created when he was fifteen years old to the current work created with his son, Ulysses, a glassblower. Stephen’s wall pieces create stories of ancient times through the interior architecture of fictional tombs. The viewer shares a window on this world through the descriptive titles that begin - then drop - the short story about each piece. Other wall pieces recall museum-like cabinets of curiosities. Civilization as They Knew It is the collection of objects and crypts found in Stephen Paulsen’s mind.

7 Visions: Wood as Fiber
7 Visions: Wood as Fiber

March 7 - May 17, 2008

7 Visions takes a different look at the "wood" in wood art. These artists treat wood as fiber - whether it is sewn, woven, or given the appearance of fibers. The seven artists featured in this exhibit include Dorothy Gill Barnes (US), Michael Brolly (US), Markku Kosonen (Finland), Dona Look (US), Bill Luce (US), Debra Sachs (US), Jack Slentz (US).

These artists tackle many questions about creating art from a whole tree. Is it possible to treat a tree with reverence while sculpting it? Can bark be used as a serious medium? What can sand-blasting reveal about the structure of wood? How can thin slices of wood be stitched together to return the wood to a three-dimesional form? Discover seven artists answers to these questions in 7 Visions.

Rose-Engines & Kings
“Rose-Engines & Kings: Contemporary Ornamental Turning 2008”

February 1, 2008 – March 22 , 2008

Rose-Engines & Kings features delicate, intricately textured objects created by specialty artists using century-old machines. Ornamental turning stems from the 1600s when European kings appointed highly skilled artists with specialty lathes to create the finest treasures in ivory and exotic materials for their personal collections. This exhibit, curated by long-time ornamental turner Jon Sauer of California, showcases the exquisite work being executed with the same patience and perfection by contemporary ornamental turners. Alongside Rose Engines & Kings, a companion exhibit will feature selections from the Wood Turning Center collection with a special tribute to the late Dale Chase of California.
